Tell me a story about London in 1 minute

Start from Westminster station, bringing all tourists to London eye,

RAW update

I decided to store RAW images in the DNG, I sacrifice additional operations to get DNG file from camera, but get support by mostly available programs. At this moment I’m trying to use Aperture 2.

Today I discovered one great feature. Aperture 2 creates thumbnails for the files, once files are added to library. What do I get from this ? Leopard Magic functions preview is working with DNG files !!!

Preview DNG

Special program is not necessary to view RAW files, open folder with DNG file and click ‘space’ on the file to use Preview.

Olympus E-520, fighting with RAW

New camera – new headaches.

Recently I purchased my first DSLR, I decided to store photos in RAW.JPG is easier and faster way to store and save images from camera, in terms of HDD space it’s few times effective. But camera provides options to save in RAW, why should I use JPG then ?

RAW takes more time to get photos from camera to ready state. Additional [$$$] software is required to proceed RAW images. Olympus E-520 saves images in ORF format, it’s being used by few older Olympus cameras, as E-520 is very new model [release on May], many “traditional” RAW programs refuse to work with Olympus E-520. List of traditional programs and their relations to Olympus E-520 RAW,

+ Olympus Master 2 [Free], alma-mater software provides support for E-520 RAW images for sure. I’m using it now. It’s seriously slow for me, no too much functions for RAW processing, not too comfortable work with the photo batch.

+ Olympus Studio 2 [100$ for US customers, 100 EUR for EU customers], it offers fast RAW processing and good options with working on batch. Time by time I consider to buy it for my Macintosh, but discriminate software price for European market is a barrier.

Apple Aperture [199$], legendary Aperture doesn’t support E-520 at this moment, most likely HUGE resources were devoted to IPhone2 software development. We can wait in the near future, that they will add support for E-520

± Adobe Lightroom [299$], currently software lacks direct support for E-520 RAW, Adobe is working on support for Olympus E-520 support.

! DNG converter, one workaround exists how to get E-520 RAW to Lightroom, Aperture or any other program you use. Adobe is offering their publicly available DNG format, that is recognizable by most existing RAW software. DNG question is very arguable, from one hand format is supported by different softwares and camera proprietary RAW format isn’t issue for RAW software anymore, but from other hand more resources required to convert your camera RAW to DNG.

P.S. Currently I’m waiting and at least have reasonable excuse, why I haven’t get ready all my photos 🙂 I’m trying to decide, what to do with RAW,

? use Olympus Studio,
? wait for ORF support in Aperture or Lightroom,
? convert all RAW to DNG and use Aperture and Lightroom now.

New camera

Yesterday, I get new camera – Olympus E-520. My old Canon Powershot was good and honestly made good pictures for 4 years. All modern products have usage time limit, 4 years for point and shot camera is very good result.

I had looong looong time to select my first DSLR. Nikon, Canon, Nikon, Canon, Nikon, Nikon. I was very close to get Nikon, but my favorite model D80 is too old [and overpriced ?]. Canon, my intuition was strongly against Canon. Olympus, what’s that ?

My dad owns Olympus E-510, and I was wondering, why he never told me that Olympus is the best camera ever made and I should use only it. I read different reviews and forums, it was very funny to read forums about religious fights Canon vs. Nikon, where people sometimes post too much useless information. But almost 90% of the information was about Canon or Nikon. That’s why I didn’t considered Olympus as alternative. But recently I looked in the E-500 series, read sorted reviews about E-520 and liked different features.

Image stabilizer, anti-dust, probably a bit better [more expensive] default kit lenses, price [brand price is tricky factor]. Yes, I missed opportunity to get gateway to huuuge lenses type available for Canons, get mystical 4/3. But all the way my intuition from the beginning told me I need that camera. I’ve used to follow my intuition.

As many good people said, It’s not a camera, it’s a man behind the camera.

My first impression about the camera. “Wow !” and “So difficult !“.

“Wow !” is logical, as recently I was using old Opel [Canon PowerShot A80] and got brand new car [any you like] with a lot of untouched features.

Transition was more difficult, as I expected. My dad said, it’ll take some time to feel comfortable with a camera. I thought “no way”, it should happen in a few moments. I was wrong. There are so much features and I have to control all of them. Even getting photo from camera is more difficult as previously. Here you can look for the photo where I’d tested stabilizer. I read the manual before switching the camera, but I need to look 2 times in the manual to select correct stabilizer option and disable flash 🙂

Few people told me, that I’m crazy to spend so much money for the useless camera. Well, maybe, but some of us spend money for SUV and luxury cards without a reason, casino and travels, clothes and girls. Tastes are different. DSLR is something that I missed long in my life and I don’t care how much I should to pay for it.

Spring ! Only in Latvia

Real spring came to Latvia.
Today in the morning I went to work by car and was wondered, that 1/3 of cars were with 5 cm of snow. There was an idea, that this was extreme flashmob to go one day to work with layer of snow. Indeed there was snow in specific city districts, but not at all,

Today you could feel real spring, almost all day weather reports showed heavy snow. You will see, what we have in our suburb area.
Note that I’m sharing very private photo, the view from my apartment windows, not too many people know about these views.
