Wrong Attitude, Better Health. Food in Helsinki

On my trip to Helsinki, I didn’t have any plan, where to go, where to eat. Sleeping on a bench in the Vantaa airport, the only planned point of the entire journey [Iron Maiden concert was off the list].

I got big map of Helsinki in the central railroad station, walked down the streets for several hours. Sooner or later my stomach would ask me, where to eat in Helsinki ? I denied myself to think about McDonald’s or Hesburger. By the way, do you know that Hesburger is Finland company and it was founded in 1966 ?! Average food prices in Helsinki center almost ruined my optimism, I’m certainly not type of tourist who is ready to pay 40 Euros for main course.

Somewhere in center I saw signboard “Wrong Noodle Bar”, firstly read it as “Wrong Noody Bar” and thought, ooo striptease or similar service place. I was wrong, I grabbed big plate of Asian style fried rices with chicken and local blueberry ice tea for 8 Euros ! Once I paid for the meal, officiant gave me small “black box”. I took my seat and thought “wtf, why do I need black box” ?. Black box started to vibrate, when mine wrong noodles were ready. Together with offered hot sauce wrong noodles were very delicious. Cheap and delicious.

If you don’t have anything against Asian food, I recommend you to check Wrong Noodle Bar address, when you are going to Helsinki. Wrong Attitude, Better Health is Wrong Noodle bar slogan.

Yogyakarta Food

My first lunch in Yogya was the most impressive …

Lunch TIme

Officiant just brought all the stuff that they have in the menu [mostly fish dishes]. The system is very easy, how much you so much you pay. I’m wondering how they remember, which food is missing. After you finish officiant comes and writes what is on the table, then magic formula is used to calculate price. And You pay for the missing dishes…

There is no spicy food at all, the same is for pork dishes. Plenty of rice and nuddles dishes together with mix of chicken, beef, lamb and shrimps. Yes, on the same plate at once [traditional way]. To get a food a little bit spicy, everywhere you can find Indonesian Chili sauce, that tastes like it’s been favorite sauce in heaven for a long time [I hope to get some time and bring few bottles to Latvia].

Huh, as well you can get a duck. I haven’t tried, but they bring real duck, I cannot imagine how it’s possible to put this duck inside you.

Yogyakarta prices for the food amazes the imagination. We ate 3/4 of the dishes you see in the image, it was quite big lunch for the four people, which cost 10 US dollars [big huh in your face]. Even respectable restaurants offer quite nice and affordable prices. By the way, they have a solution for not nice american ice tea, which is made from real tea. Additionally liquid sugar bottle is offered to you, that makes ice tea really delicious.

Now, in Bali [tourist place] everything is different, 2 or 3 times expensive food and quality is completely different. But, it’s different story, now some more about Yogyakarta…

Mumbai food

Mumbai adventure is continuing… So what about food ?

We have started our indian trip with the hotel check-in. We have asked hotel guy for coffee. He brought us coffee. Unique coffee which is made in Indian way

coffee –> hot water –> milk = ± European coffe,
hot milk –> packet with coffee = Mumbai coffee.

It is milk with coffee smell, not the coffee, but it tastes !

Our day consists of three eating usually. First goes breakfast, it is hotel breakfast, nothing interesting about it. Egg hotel guy is five times slower then Egypt egg guy,

Second time of eating, let’s call it lunch. We are preferring vegetarian food for lunch, we are in in India, where vegetarian food cult is very strong. Our first Indian lunch was pretty extreme, it was the local cafe. For example you can see rats on the floor. After 3 days in India, nothing can shock you. Moreover everywhere food costs approximately the same price and you get the same food. Only pay attention to the fact, if there are some visitors in restaurant !

The name for all dishes usually means nothing. Ask officiant to recommend, sometimes they just going over entire menu, but you can be lucky and they will recommend something delicious. Food can be spicy, but tasty spicy, not extreme spicy. Our lunch is something like this,

Indian's food

Dinner can be non-vegetarin. One Indian guy said to us, “Chicken is not meat”. Want to taste something delicious, Chicken Tikka is absolutely great. If you do not know what to order, try chicken tikka ! It was one of the best chicken, I’ve ever eat !

Chicken Tikka

For the evenings we can go with beer. The interesting fact, that two beers cost the same price you pay for 3 people dinner. 300 rupies cost for 2 beers – 7 dollars, the same prices you can pay for dinner. Motorickhaws cost 15 rupies. Good local beer is Kingfisher. Usually Indian people drink strong 10% bear, but it is too strong for us. Middle 5% beer is pretty enough. Kingfisher can easily compete with Latvian brands.

To respect local people, we are trying to eat with right hand, only right hand. When you are finished, officiant brings you plate with warm water and lime in it, to wash you right hand. Before trip to India, one colleague asked me, “Bring me chewing gum from India. They should have different Chewing gum”. Yes they have completely different chewing gum,

These things are very tasty and makes breath very fresh. If you will go to the same place second time, all officiants recognize you, like they meet old fried, and even remember what you have ordered yesterday…
