The power of the word.

cigarette1.jpg“Thank your for smoking” the movie is called, I must say not the recently released movie.

Satirical comedy follows the machinations of Big Tobacco’s chief spokesman, Nick Naylor, who spins on behalf of cigarettes while trying to remain a role model for his twelve-year-old son.

Movie is not about smoking propaganda or anti propaganda, for me it is about discussions and debates.
It contains good phrases, that I want to highlight,

“If you argue correctly, you’re newer wrong.”

“Well, if it’s your job to be right, then you’re never wrong.

“I proved that you’re wrong, and if you’re wrong, I’m right.”

That’s why most times, hot discussion is pointless, because any of the side is unable to acknowledge that truth goes for the other side. Hot discussion result is strongly related to the experience of the each side, they are able to find key arguments to win the discussion or not, another great phrase,
“Never argue with idiots. They drag you down to their level then beat you with experience.”

Movie is not about the idiots, but it proves theory, that in case one of the side has experienced “golden argument” man. This side may prove you anything, even facts that are certainly wrong.

Good and calm discussion is making “brains” to work faster and move ahead, but in case discussion is going under the rules, most of them not. That’s why is better to stay away from such discussion, when your arguments and opinion are not respected, when emotions of the other side are “smoking”.

When you enter the new discussion battle, keep in mind few rules, in case you want to be respected by the other side, after discussion has ended. It is not very easy to follow them, but they may help you to get more wide imagination and point of view – the result of the discussion,

  • Get the point of the second part, do not accept it but do not deny it from the start as well.
  • Remember, he/she is a person too, respect his or her.
  • Do not take attacking role.
  • Do not interrupt.
  • No personal attacks.
  • Be ready to present your arguments.

Movie genre is positioned as comedy, but it is “good” comedy, rather than pop “teen” comedy, that’s why it might be worth to spend your time on it 🙂

  1. I had the same thoughts about that movie. It was highly interesting, and I learned a lot about good arguing. Plus it’s funny, well written, and wonderfully shot. Definitely recommended.

Aha, before the film main actor produced some subjective doubts in my mind, but movie surprised me and I realized that I was wrong at the expectations.

Eh, it is habit that goes from the childhood, when I watched movies about the court proceedings. Every time such “words” play is enjoyable thing for me.

If anyone could recommend similar movies (to ‘Thank for the smoking’), I will appreciate it.
